Water and Sanitation
This is one of our most important areas of focus. LOCIFU s has also constructed water sources and wells and has provided plastic tanks to the elderly to improve on the health and sanitation of the people in areas of our operation.
LOCAL CITIZEN FOUNDATION UGANDA (LOCIFU) has organized various programs for the youth, and women in health and sanitation, HIV infections and control measures, non communicable diseases, among others.
LOCIFU puts emphasis on sustaining access and ensuring that water stressed communities also access clean water. We use integrated water resources management using community participatory approaches to ensure sustainable water quality and quantity.
Emphasis is also on promotion of rain water harvest as an appropriate technology to populations living on hilltops, gravity flow schemes and protected springs for communities in valleys and low lying parts of the ridges.
Under this Program, for the Only three years in existence ,LOCIFU has constructed fully functional water supplies in the local community, 50 gravity flow tap stands, rain water jars (420 liters), 20 rainwater jars (1,500 liters), flexible water tanks (1,000 liters), 15 ferrocement tanks. (4,000 litres) for women groups and the elderly; 15 ferrocement tanks (4,000 litres) for people living with HIV/AIDS and 4 ferrocement tanks (4,000 litres) for people with disabilities, 12 institutional tanks (20,000 litres) and 4 demonstration tanks (4,000-10,000 litres).
To ensure proper sanitation for the local communities, LOCIFU has also been involved in constructing both public and family toilets for the vulnerable people as well as engaging in hygiene awareness campaigns.
